Akilah Mitchell is a young Trinidadian artist whose patriotism for her homeland is evident in almost all of her pieces. From historical buildings, popular landscapes, seascapes, festivals to the typical “trini moments”, she captures it all on canvas. At the age of 13, Akilah found her true passion when she began art classes in high school. From that moment, she knew that Visual Arts would continue to be a major part of her life. After pursuing art for CXC, she continued her studies in other areas, eventually obtaining an undergraduate degree in International Relations and Political Science and later on a  Masters degree in Global Studies at the University of the West Indies.

While studying, Akilah never stopped creating because it continued to be her form of therapy to get through the adversities of her academic life. Some of her pieces can be found in households across North America and Europe, since they were sold to people of the Trinbagonian diaspora who felt that these pieces fully encapsulated their homeland. She completed her magnificent seven collection in 2018 which she anticipates will aid in their continued preservation and restoration. Shortly after finishing  her magnificent 7 collection and exhibiting them along with other pieces in a few collab exhibitions ,she began teaching art  to kids through camps and ongoing classes, school programmes, senior citizen art programmes, adults and even started hosting sip and paint events . In addition, she started painting live at events especially weddings, since its one of the ways in which she can show her process to the public in the form of entertainment. Her main aim  is to ensure that more people have an appreciation for visual arts and she believes that teaching it from a very young age is one of the best ways to do this. She hosted her first kids art exhibition in 2019 in an effort to motivate and encourage her students to continue creating.  She also hopes that her passion will continue to be used as a way to remind and educate individuals about the treasures of the precious twin island and in so doing encourage to promote, protect and preserve them.

My Medium

My Medium

Painting for me is sometimes a way of entering my happy place by creating my own concept of where I would like to be or something I yearn to see, teleporting into a world of my own. I use many different mediums, such as pencil, graphite, acrylics and pastels. However,  my main medium is acrylics since while creating my concept of reality I can change things easily whenever I decide.
